Here’s Litter Intelligence programme coordinator

Here’s Litter Intelligence programme coordinator Shelley Butt, and she thinks butts suck! Leaving butts anywhere but the bin is not OK — first they get into the gutters before making their way onto our beaches.

Since the start of our Litter intelligence programme at SC, we have picked up 11,179 cigarette butts from 213 sites around the coastlines of Aotearoa — these are just the beaches we monitor. Can you believe it?

They may be tiny, but they are horrible for our marine environments! Cigarettes are made of cellulose acetate, a type of plastic. We find them in different levels of degradation on the beach, but these suckers do not biodegrade!

Blue gold spotted! Recently, this spectacular phenomenon was captured at Tindalls Beach on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. It may look like something straight out of a sci-fi film but it’s definitely real!

Curious about how this occurs? Bioluminescence is produced by an enzyme system (luciferin/luciferase) within a living organism which then emits light. This widely occurs in marine vertebrates and invertebrates.

It’s amazing to see how mother nature works and this occurrence reminds us of the importance of protecting our marine life, as they not only play such a vital role in the mauri of our moana but bring such awe-inspiring beauty!

Ten thousand hours! That’s the total time citizen scientists have spent collecting data for Litter Intelligence. For perspective, that’s equivalent to 4.8 people working full time for a full year. A massive thank you from us for spending your time and energy to assemble Aotearoa’s very first litter database, a project that belongs to all of us. You should be proud!

We hope everyone knows Aotearoa's little songbird, pīwakawaka / fantail. Did you know that pīwakawaka chicks are fed every 10 minutes — almost 100 times a day! Pīwakawaka like to hang out with humans as our walking disturbs insects, making it easier for the pīwakawaka to catch. We also like to think it’s because they love us back… maybe?

Here’s hoping our upcoming planting season will eventually provide a thriving habitat for these little guys.
